3 Things To Consider When Hiring An Offshore Developer

I would strongly advise you to not hire Indian web developers. I won’t name any specific companies or reasons, as we have somewhat worked out our issues and they have asked me to remove my former posts about their ridiculous quality and service. I give you this advice not because I’m racist, or a bigot, it’s just that India is a country that doesn’t seem to operate the same way we do here in America – and I’m not just talking about the different time zone.

I urge you to seriously consider the following points before hiring offshore web development:

1 – How Does Their Website Look?

If they don’t have a functional website of their own, then I would not even consider thinking of hiring them. If they do have one, how does it look? Would you be happy if that was your website? Does it function well? If you answered “no” to any of those questions, then you can say no to hiring that developer. If you hire them, you’re going to get the same or worse quality on your project. I promise.

2 – Are they available when you are?

This one can be tricky. If you have any experience whatsoever in hiring offshore web developement (especially if you’re dealing with Indian dev. companies), you know that they will make themselves available at any hour to “discuss project with you.” My best advice for seeing through their ‘availability front’ is to google them. Google the name of the person you’re chatting with along with the company name. In other words: search for [name] [company name]. Dig up the dirt on the company before giving them your money. If they’ve screwed someone over before, there’s a pretty good chance that the person has ranted about their experience with explicit detail. This is good for you. If you find any dirt on them, tell them that you’ll pay on 100% completion of the project and after the files have been successfully transferred to your server. I’m serious. If they’re serious about making a repeat customer out of you, they’ll probably take you up on it.

3 – Can they do anything and everything?

If so, look for someone else. These companies have a bad habit of promising the world when in fact, they can’t do jack. Ask for examples of their work, and proof that they actually did the work. Some companies will send you all sorts of examples of work that they supposedly did. Most of the time they’re BS-ing to get your project money.

These three tips alone would have saved me a couple thousand dollars.
