What the heck are favicons? How do I make one?

Favicon Definition: Favorites Icon.
Examples: Internet Explorer Favicon  eBay Favicon Paypal Favicon

You know how you can save webpages as “favorites”? Well, you know that little internet explorer icon that’s most likely next to most of your saved favorites? That’s what a favicon is. As you can see from the examples above, it’s just another way for webmasters to personalize their site.

Favicons can be a pain to design due to the restrictions (below). But it’s actually really simple to get one on your site. I’ll let you in on a few tips for creating your own favicon and uploading it to your site.

Restrictions:

1. 16×16 pixels (I think they must be this small)
2. Must be a “.ico” file. Such as: favicon.ico or myfavicon.ico or whatever.ico.
3. Must be placed in your root directory on your file server (ftp) for the browser to automatically detect it or put this code into your index.html file <link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”images/favicon.ico” mce_href=”images/favicon.ico” type=”image/x-icon” /> and place your favicon.ico into the /images/ folder.
4. Probably a few more that I’m too lazy to mention.

Steps:

1. Go Here: http://www.favicon.cc/ or google for another “favicon generator”.
2. Download your complete favicon.
3. Upload it to your root directory or your /images/ directory (if followed instructions above).
