Now I love good design and stunning aesthetics as much as the next guy, but there comes a point when just because something looks cool, doesn’t mean it’s functional or even desirable. If you’re anything like me, you work with about 500 different programs and messenger windows open at one time in your taskbar. Microsoft thought they would be clever and try to solve this problem by nesting similar programs together like this:

So pretty much, say you have 20 separate instances open of internet explorer, what you would do is hover over the internet explorer icon and after about a second of waiting (yeah, it doesn’t seem like that long, but it adds up) it pops up the little bubble that shows all of the windows you have open. Update: Right here our friendly neighborhood AssHat pointed out that “OMGZ you don’t have to hover over it you can just CLICK IT you noob!” (or something to that effect). I know that you don’t have to hover over it, the whole point I’m trying to make is that whether it’s a hover, or a click, it’s just one unnecessary hurdle to jump to get to the window you want to open. Some users may like this feature (particularly noob users, no offense), but I find it terribly annoying. It makes me think about what I’m doing every single time, and that’s not a good thing. So, you’re probably saying to yourself “Jeremy, you’re the noob. You can just go to the taskbar properties and just use the “never combine” feature.” Alright, so let us do that.

Now you’ll get one icon for the program, then a little bar that is supposed to show particular instances of that open application. One bar per instance. The bar doesn’t even show the program icon, or a label for it. I would show a screenshot of what I’m talking about, but I’m too lazy to edit the registry to back to what it used to be before I fixed it.

As a side note, it seems that I’m the only one on the internet that is having this problem. Everyone else seems to be seeing this when they use the “never combine” feature (if you do too, let me know in the comments):

Well, I couldn’t ever get my taskbar to show like that so I had to do some googling around. I found this post that describes a simple registry hack that will allow you to have the taskbar show both the icon of the program as well as the label for the instance that is open!

LABEL PLUS ICONS FOR WINDOWS 7 TASKBAR

So pretty much all you have to do to get your taskbar to look like this:

is open your registry editor (search your computer for “regedit”) and do the following:

Add a string called “MinWidth” to “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics” and set to 54 then restart.

However, for me the MinWidth string was already there, so I just modified the value from what it was (-245 I think) to 54. Then restart your computer.

In conclusion, I have no idea how I dealt with the annoying standard windows 7 Taskbar for so long. When you’re working with 20 different spreadsheets at one time, it just doesn’t make sense to hover over the excel icon, only to see a little preview of the window. I’d much rather just click it and open it.

Do you agree with me on this? Did this post make you want to change your taskbar to be cool like mine? I really want to know if I’m just crazy, or if the standard hover-over taskbar in windows 7 blows.

So I was driving home from Southern Utah yesterday and I noticed some sweet logos on buildings, and billboards. I love looking at the stuff that these companies do to market their services, and I’m particularly fond of the logos below. I think these companies are all utah startups, besides Univar, so here’s a little link-love from Elite Eternity.

Omniture – Online Business Optimization

Omniture is the leading provider of online business optimization, which it delivers through the Omniture Online Marketing Suite™. Online business optimization is a strategy for using customer insight to drive innovation and increased loyalty in a digital world. The Online Marketing Suite empowers marketers to use customer insight to optimize interactions—creating more personalized, relevant customer experiences while also maximizing their marketing spend.

Univar – USA Chemical Distributor

Univar USA is the leading chemical distributor in the United States, providing more chemical products and related services than any other company in the marketplace. Our wide distribution network, with locations coast-to-coast, helps guarantee fast, reliable service to Univar’s customers.

Zinch – Get Hooked Up With Colleges

We hook students up with scholarships.
Based on our comprehensive student profile, we can match students to any scholarship out there. Students tell us who they are…and we hook them up with scholarships that matter.

MWI – Utah SEO

Back to basics. We recently stopped offering 90% of our services and launched this new website. Why? Because we’ve figured out what we do well and what we don’t. And what do we do well? Web design, search engine optimization, and search engine marketing. If you hire us for your next SEO project or to provide any of the other services we offer you can rest assured you are going to get it done right for a fair price.

There really isn’t anything super-special about the above logos, and I think that is why I love them. Simple is in.

I just had a thought.

We hear stories all the time of people who pitched their “brilliant” ideas to huge corporate executives, only to be laughed out of the building, office etcetera. That story is usually immediately preceeded by a paragraph about that same lowly entrepreneur now being one of the richest and most successful businessmen in the country. I pose the question: Why is this?

Is it merely because the first-time rejection was so strong that it booted him into gear and made him want success that much more just to prove the jerk who laughed at him wrong? Or is it something deeper than that? Did that entrepreneur have what it took all along, or did he need that boost of rejection to motivate his success?

I’d say he had what it took all along, but a nice stiff shot of rejection never hurt anyone kept anyone from reaching a much desired goal.

Just a random thought. What do you think?

Thank you eBay!

This actually happened nearly a year ago.

How I Got Banned

I was listing a product. I listed said product in the wrong category. I think I listed it in “digital products” instead of the proper category “Miscellaneous”. Oooops, my bad!

BANNED!

Just like that! In months leading up to the ban, I’m pretty sure I paid over $1,000 in ebay fees. I don’t understand how ebay can feel comfortable doing this to loyal customers. Right now I’m appealing my decision on ebay’s live chat. We’ll see how that goes. I don’t expect to get too far, nor will I be very disappointed if I don’t. They lose a customer, I have to think outside the box for a new venue of selling products, we all win.

Congratulations, eBay! You just lost another customer!

Update: Unfortunately, the reason why your account says that is not available to me. I can still help you though by getting you in touch with our Trust and Safety team who specializes in this. They can clarify why the account got suspended.

^ This was after they told me they would look into it on live chat. I appreciate the scripts I am fed. Makes me happy. Thanks, Indian on the other end.
