My Life, and Pursuit of Becoming A Millionaire

Inspectlet: Perfect Blend of Crazy Egg & Clicktale, & Cheaper Than Both.

Now you can peek over your customers shoulders as they browse your website in real time!

Inspectlet is a new real-time analytics, and website heat mapping + screen capture tool that allows you to take a peek at how your customers react with your website as they browse. This means that the software literally takes screencapture videos of users cursor trails as they navigate from page to page on your website.

Inspectlet was kind enough to give me a free demo of their platform, and despite a few issues (the most substantial being a speed issue with my site after the install, that they immediately fixed after an email), the features provided are well worth the price. Their basic plan is even cheaper than the most well known heatmapping solution, called crazy egg – and crazy egg doesnt even offer the ability to record user sessions – inspectlet does.

So if you arent in a position to pay the huge monthly fees for a robust solution like clicktale, yet you arent happy with the cheaper, more watered down solution that is crazy egg, then inspectlet is probably right for you. They offer a free one week trial so you can test the waters.

I have personally tried crazy egg off and on over the last several years, and the data I harvested just didnt justify paying the monthly fee. Especially when there is no screencapturing! Im no analytics pro, but when i compare inspectlet with crazy egg and clicktale, inspectlet offers the most bang for my buck.

I wish that they would add the option to filter out my IP from data gathering. This is actually a critical feature that needs to be added asap. Or maybe they already have. Its been a minute or two since i last logged in and they are usually quick about fixing things.

So give inspectlet a try.

I almost felt like a spy when i watched my first recorded screencapture. Try it. You will too. ;)

Note: password and other sensitive information fields are obviously censored out, so dont get too excited.

How To Search Multiple Files & Folders Fast!

Have you ever been looking for a key phrase in a bunch of files, but you aren’t sure which file the phrase is in? If you do any sort of coding or computer admin work you may be familiar with this. So instead of manually opening up a list of 10 different .php files to search for the phrase “echo ‘I Am Awesome’;”, there is a program out there that allows you to specify a folder or a group of files that you can search instantly all with the click of a button. Now that I have let the anticipation build . . .

Introducing: Windows Grep

I’m sure you’ll find it useful. Just thought I’d let all of my fellow computer nerds out there know about this sweet addition to my arsenal.

Free Productivity Tip: Stop Emailing Yourself

Perhaps you’re already aware of a cool little tool called DropBox. I’ve known about it for quite a while now, but just started using it myself. I just got a new MacBook Pro (love it btw), and so I’ve had a need for an easy way to send files to and from my PC for the last little bit until I get parallels desktop running and can ditch my beast of a desktop once and for all.

I’ll usually create a file on my Mac, then send it to myself via email in order to fix it up, or make some edits on my PC in word. So instead of emailing myself, now I use DropBox. DropBox is a little program that you install on all of your computers, devices, etc… It’s basically a really quick, convenient way to FTP yourself a file. When you install the program, you are given a “live” folder on each device. Anything you put into that folder will be synced between all of your folders on all of your different devices. It does it within seconds too. Really convenient.

So stop emailing yourself files. Start using DropBox. Hopefully it’ll help you save some time. BTW, they have paid versions, but I haven’t seen it necessary to upgrade from the free version yet.

Make WordPress Search Suck Less

The default WordPress search function sucks.

Yoast knows it, and so do a lot of other people. Problem is, most of the solutions out there require editing core code and other crap that I’m too lazy to mess around with.

If you’re looking for a way to make your default WordPress search function suck less, then I strongly recommend you check out a plugin called Relevanssi. I’ve been testing it out on a few of my other blogs and am happy to say that it is a huge improvement over the default WordPress search function. I don’t really know or care how it works, but it improves the search results a lot. Very rarely do I get a “Sorry, but no results were found” page anymore.

This is especially a big deal when somebody is searching your site to find a product that they are in “buying mode” for. Say for instance they misspell a word in their search and your site doesn’t find any matching results. What do they see? A blank page. What do they do? Most likely exit your site and some other affiliate who has his shit together will get the commission for the product they were searching for.

Always looking for better plugins and stuff, so if you have any other suggestions for making the search function better, particularly hacks for the Thesis theme, then hook me up.

Facebook App For Windows Mobile 6.1 Finally! New Juicy ROM For Sprint Diamond Rocks!

I know I just wrote a post about how Mighty’s ROM was so much better than Juicy’s, but the ROM war continues and Juicy just released a new ROM (4.5.5) for the Sprint Diamond. It has all sorts of new, super-cool features that put it a few notches above Mighty’s latest ROM.

If you want this ROM (Juicy 4.5.5), but aren’t sure how to flash your phone, you may want to check out my How To Unlock, Flash the Sprint Touch PRO guide. Note: If you want to know how to flash the Diamond, do not follow the explicit instructions that I wrote on that post. It’s the same process, but if you download and flash to the ROM that I point to in that post, it will jack your phone up – and that’s not a good thing.

What I love about Juicy’s new ROM:

- Facebook app

I never thought I would see the day. This app has pretty much all the bells and whistles you could ever want out of a Windows Mobile Facebook app. Now someone needs to whip up a cool Twitter app for Windows Mobile.

- New keyboard and tap-sensitive vibration

This was on the previous ROM, but it’s still worth mentioning. The new keyboard makes typing on the Diamond a lot more fun easy. The typing still sucks, but this keyboard + the touch vibration is a complete step up from the standard keyboard.

- TouchFLO upgrade

Now you can customize the options you want to see instead of having to scroll through all the crap you don’t want to see (i.e. the music player).

- Improved iconography

All of the icons seem to have had an overhaul. I’m not sure who made them or whatever, but they look good. It’s nice to see something new.

- In-call recorder app

Apparently you can now record calls while you’re talking. I haven’t used this app yet, but I look forward to posting some prank phone calls. ;)

- Flip It App

I haven’t really used this either, but this will come in handy for screen rotation tweaking.

If you’re still using the Mighty ROM, you may want to Flash to this ROM. It’s definitely a step up from Mighty’s latest ROM.

For the record (and thanks to The Hat for letting me know): Apparently Juicy couldn’t keep up with the development of two ROM’s, so he got a new guy (JMZ Taylor) to pick up where he left off. Each new ROM gets Juicy’s stamp of approval though – which is good.

Google Voice Available…But Not To Me

Well that sucks. I was super excited when I saw Google’s Tweet that said: Yes, it’s true: Google Voice is coming http://bit.ly/oIj55 And I was even more excited when I watch the teaser demo and saw what Google Voice could do: But then I read: Google Voice will be available initially to existing users of [...]
