Do you use TwitterFollower to artificially enlarge your Twitter manhood? You should read this post. I’d like to know your thoughts.
THE ANALOGY:
Twitter Follower is nothing more than a giant, opt-in email spam list. Would you ever sign up for a service like this?
I spam you. You spam me. What the heck is the point?
I’m looking at my TweetDeck feed right now, and 5 of the 7 items are Twshit. The other 2 items are from people who I don’t know, don’t necessarily care to know, and what they just Tweeted about is pretty much not relevant to anything I care about. So why am I getting all of these crappy Tweets? Because I, and you probably did too, signed up for John Chow’s Twitter Follower tool!
“HOW GREAT!” We all thought! I sign up for Twitter Follower, follow tons of people, they follow me back, then I’ll share my helpful, and interesting commentary with tons more people SPAM THE LIVING HELL OUT OF THEM WITH MY SNEAKY AFFILIATE LINKS! What? You thought you were the only one that had that plan in mind? haha. Yeah, me too.
THE FLAW:
Have you ever tried to market to an affiliate marketer before? Neither have I, but you get where I’m going. It just doesn’t work out very well. The whole idea behind affiliate marketing (or marketing in general) is to trick people into buying your products. Affiliates are, by nature, almost 100% trick-proof. They know all the little sneaky ways that people try to sell them things, because they’re the ones doing it in the first place. So what does that have to do with Twitter Follower?
I’d be willing to be that 95% of the people that use Twitter Follower are affiliates themselves. So now you are following hundreds and hundreds of affiliates! What does that mean? That you’re all trying to sell each other the same crap! All in slightly more sneaky ways than one another. But to someone that knows the game, SexayDiva24 who just Tweeted about where to buy the latest sex toy collection knows nothing more about sex toys than she he does about being a girl! She’s he’s an affiliate marketer! But guess who’s getting all of his tricky messages!? Another affiliate who couldn’t care less about what SexayDiva24 has to say.
WHAT TWITTER WAS SUPPOSED TO BE:
A tool to share thoughts with our friends, family, people that actually care about (or at least fake like) they care about what we have to say. And to build genuine relationships.
WHAT TWITTER IS NOW:
A Spamtastic, Spam Machine.
MY EXPERIMENT:
I’m going to create a spam email list with Aweber and see how many people I can get to sign up. I’ll tell them that they can sign up for free spam, kind of advertised like I did with the banner I created above. It’s going to be a new sensation. A blistering hot new fad that will sweep across all the interwebz. I’ll be sure to let you know when I do it so you can sign up!
MY POINT:
Would you ever sign up for a service that would spam your email inbox relentlessly? Of course you wouldn’t, at least not on purpose. So why sign up for TwitterFollower? The only advantage with TwitterFollower is that you can throw the spam back. Neither party is going to read the spam, so why waste your time?
